SIBERIA

FISHING EXPEDITION TO ARCTIC SIBERIA
SHEEFISH(INCONNU),  HUGE TAIMEN , LENOK , GRAYLING

Geography. The Republic of Yakutia (Sakha) is situated in northeastern Siberia, stretches to the Henrietta Islands in the far north and is washed by the Arctic Ocean (Laptev and Eastern Siberian Seas). These waters, the coldest and iciest of all seas in the northern hemisphere, are covered by ice for 9-10 months of the year. The Stanovoy Ridge borders Yakutia in the south, the upper reaches of the Olenek river form the western border, and Chukotka forms the eastern border.

On the above map you can see the way magic Lena river forms its delta and entrance to the Laptev Sea. This part holds large protected wildlife areas of a stunning beauty , only inhabited by few Yakuts, the Northern Siberian Eskimos that herd reindeer, hunt and fish.

A 2 hr helicopter flight from Tiksi will bring us to some fabulous fishing spots on the central Olenek river amidst 3 different tributaries.

Itinerary: On day one flights from Europe to Moscow will be followed by nightflight to Yakutsk, capital of Sakha Republic. Here we will stay for one night after which a 3 hrs charterflight to Tiksi and a 2 hrs helicopterflight allow some braves of us to start fishing at Olenek River Camp already the same day. This is followed by 6 or more full fishing days to very different fishing spots using one boat plus guide for 2 guests. After that a heliflight and a charterflight brings us back to Tiksi and Yakutsk, where we will stay one night in a traditional hotel. On the next morning we will use the 8 hrs time difference to fly back and arrive in Western-Europe already the same day.

Climate. Winter is prolonged and severe, with average January temperatures about -40C  to -70 C. Summer is short but warm; average temperatures have reached 18C-23 C in Yakutsk whereas Tiksi may have up to 20 C but also cold spells may occur .

WE
will not kill any Taimen…..

Fishing: We will both meet stationary and anadromous fish. In July there usually is a good run of the mysterious Sheefish ( Stenodus Leucichthys Nelma ). This salmonide belongs to the Coregonus family and may reach up to 50 lbs. Average weight 15-20 lbs. We may also expect some Arctic Char. Tributaries are home to the “Tiger of the Taiga” called Hucho Taimen with weights up to 150 lbs but averaging also 15-20 lbs.

There will also be large stocks of Lenok( Siberian Trout), Limba( a Lenok like fish with beautiful large red spots)and grayling.

Nice Lenok

Accomodation and Equipment: Depending upon local circumstances the helicopter will bring us to places with log cabins or quality tents with cooks and fishing guides ( 1 guide per 2 guests). In the camps there will be full board whereas quality boats will bring us to various fishing spots. There will be electricity from a generator and a satellite phone. Good warm clothes will be necessary.

Qualification:  We will be the first strangers that were ever allowed to visit and fish this last unspoilt Arctic paradise. Not only may we benefit from 24 hrs of daylight but also will we  meet a strange , bizar but beautiful nature in all its settings.  Fish will be there but do not expect big explanations about techniques. We will have to find out mostly ourselves. A reliable contact however informed me that it should be able to get all species on Fly. Do not expect luxury and be prepared upon harsh conditions with possible changes in program. We are almost sure that you will be rewarded with some of the ultimate memories from the fishing trip of a lifetime.
