1. Two combination trips to Argentina and Chile

Dear Flyfishing Friends,

Since1994, together with our friends, we visit Argentina and Chile. The idea of changing our European Winter for lovely weather in unbelievably beautiful surroundings with the best  Flyfishing possibilities you can find on earth still hardly has found its way in traditional Europe…..This may change for some for a couple of weeks.
In February and March 2010 we make again an 18 – and a 15 day Combinationtrip to Argentina and Chile.

Trip 1: February 22 nd– March 11 th 2010. 18 Days. Luxury Tour
Rate :  Euro 3195, without flights( ca Euro 1200). 4-5 Pax
Trip 2: 08-22 March 2010. 15 Days. Medium Budget Tour         
Rate :  Euro 2595, without flights( Euro  1200) . Min 4 Participants, max 6.

The first 18-day trip  is from Februar 22 nd – March 11 th 2010.
The best possible fishing for Big Brown –and Rainbow Trout with luxury comfort from 3 Top Lodges.

Upon arrival at Balmaceda –airport , about 1800 km south of Santiago we head by 2 4WD in about 4 hrs to a Hotel in Perito Moreno(Arg). Next day brings us in  4-5 hrs far inside the Santa Cruz province where we have discovered a gorgeous Estancia(Lodge). The big Estancia in a lush green valley includes 3 private rivers and a  dozen lakes and lagoons, of which at least one of them holding great amounts of big Rainbows. Via a small stream it is connected to both an upper and a lower lake. But most of the area probably never has been fished before…. In this place you would not expect such a jewel. Both lodging and food are of great quality. And, millions of fossiles around.

Rainbows are between 6-17 lbs and catching 10-20 Fish per person per day should not be a problem. After 3 nights we will leave this place with tears in our eyes. But only for an hour or two; when we start crossing the Andes nature turns into a dream scenario. Majestic views and spectacular animal life including condors, guanaca’s, Patagonian swans, wild horses, zorro’s (fox), marsupial, , flamingos and thousands of rabbits. Our last group even spotted a puma. At the end of the afternoon we are in Cochrane/Chile. Our large  Cabin is right on the border of a gin clear river with mixed presence  of Brown- and Rainbowtrout that often go for a big Stimulator Dry fly.We will fish both lake and river for 2 nights and one whole day.

A 350 Km long drive , again trough breathtaking scenery, brings us on the next day to Cabanas Rio Simpson, just outside Coyhaique, Patagonias capital. The evening can be used for Browntrout fishing but do not be surprized when hooking a King Salmon.
Early next morning Julio, Chiles absolutely best Flyfishing Guide and his crew pick us up for a 1,5 drive to his lovely Northern Lodge. It is positioned in private area including two lakes with a river in between. Here you can also see big Trouts jumping in the falls.
Brown Trout between 6 and 16 lbs will be caught every day and every fisherman will beat his personal record. Depending on the runs we may make a short trip to a river with big numbers of very heavy Kings( seen well over 50 lbs )

After 4 nights Julio will transfer us to his Lago Frio Lodge( about 2 hrs) where we will stay for our  last 3 nights. Here a great number of rivers can be floated and fished, of course fully guided. Amongst them Rio Simpson, Pollux, Huemules and many  creeks. Great nature, great food, great fishing, great company…. .
At day 17 we will be transferred in 30-40 min. to Balmaceda airport for our journey back home with arrival on day 18. Marlies and Wim will be around during the whole local stay. In our 2 4WD Jeeps we can take 4-5 guests.

The second  , 15-day trip from  March  08-22 nd  2010 also brings us in both Argentina and Chile.
The Argentinian Estancia as a start remains on the menu. As well as Cochrane, but instead of the Chilean Lodge program we offer a great Full Board stay in Hostals and Cabins( no tents) somewhat closer to the Chilean Fjords. Fishing variety here is great.

From Balmaceda/Chile we go straight with 2 4WD in about  8  hrs to our Estancia in the Argentinian Province of Santa Cruz. From there in about 8 hrs we will make the beautiful 400 km stretch to Manihuales, where a charming FB Hostal on the border of Rio Nirehuao will accommodate  us for 3 nights.We will fish rivers like Nirehuao, Manihuales and Emperador Guillermo. There are still some late Kings followed by hungry Browns in the river. Browns are what we are after. Then in 1,5 hrs we will drive to mysterious Puerto Cisnes in order to fish the deep blue river of the same name in the afternoon. Browns and Salmon will be on the menu. We will be accomodated in 2 nice cabins with FB. The next morning a jetboat brings us through the fjords  to the mouth of otherwise unreachable rivers. Searun Rainbow, Salmon , Brown Trout and fantastic Robalo can be expected . In the evening we will be back in our Puerto Cisnes Cabana. In case we fish one day less in Manihuales( depending on conditions/ preference of guests) we may stay one more day in Puerto Cisnes in order to visit the Isla Magdalena National Park with its volcanic lake, its beautiful river Mentholat , all overlooked by Volcan Mentholat.

On day 13  we drive back in 3,5 hrs  to Cabanas Rio Simpson where after a last evening of fishing a shuttle brings us in 1 hr to Balmaceda airport the next day in order to fly back via Santiago to Madrid and Europe with arrival on day 15.

Note: In case of bad weather and possibly dark rivers closer to the Sea we have an alternative program which brings us in Alto Cisnes ,Lago Verde district, close to the Argentinian border with not only better weather but also very much variation in Brown trout fishing.
Again Marlies and Wim will guide the group of max 6 pax with 2 4WD.

Day 14.Transfer to Airport ( 1 hr). Flights Balmaceda-Santiago-Europe
Day15. Arrival in Europe.

Comments:

Both trips are relatively similar. Just the luxury part on the Chilean side is replaced by fishing rivers closer to the sea/ fjords since later in the season migrating fish arrive more frequently.
The first trip goes after the very big Brown and Rainbow Trout. So, of course lake fishing is involved. Sometimes by boat , sometimes a bit hiking but never strenuous. The second trip requires  a bit more physical activity  with only slight less luxury. It also is a bit more travelling in shorter period. Of course in this second trip there is more diversity in landscape and ways of fishing, as well as flexibility in the program considering the second part.  

The fishing equipment needed is rather limited. For myself I only use the strongest 9-10 ft Aftma 9 type single hand rod  with a Floater and a Teeny 250-300 or a 8-9 ft Aftma 6-7 rod. Of course more info will follow upon booking.
And…. Only those booking will finally hear the real names….

2. Another adventurous highlight big WHITE SPOTTED ARCTIC CHAR (KUNDZHA)
ULBEYA RIVER MOUTH/RUSSIAN FAR EAST in June 2010

The Ulbeya river mouth lays about 1 helicopter hour from Okhostk/Russian Far East.
The area is absolutely virgin. We will set up a tent camp and provide a jet boat in order to explore the lower parts of the river that in June has great runs of very strong Big Kundzha( Salvelinus Leucomaenis Arcticus) plus to 2 kinds of Dolly Varden, of which one goes up to a meter and lots of Arctic Grayling…At the end of the period some fresh Pac. Salmon will come in.Period: June 10 (09) th- June 22(23) nd 2010 , depending on accurate flight schedules 10 days/ 9 nights/8 full fishing days at the camp .

Day 01: Flights Europe-Moscow-Khabarovsk ( possibly stay 1 night in Moscow)
Day 02: Arrival Khabarovsk-Hotel, sightseeing

3. YAMA -MAGADAN , 2010  HERE WE COME……………Our Paradise since 1991

August 22 nd -September 06 th 2010, 11 full days of Fishing Heaven
The demand  for the legendary Yama-Lodge in the National Preserve is not only very
high but also combined with a stressing booking strategy. However we succeeded to get our option confirmed.

Global Position: The Lodge at the 260 km long Yama river is at 1 hr 20 min with helicopter from Magadan Airport, situated on the Sea of Okhotsk just opposite of Kamchatka. It is at CET + 10 hrs in Eastern direction.

There is, untill now, just 1 straight flight connection ( 9-10 hrs) between Moscow and Magadan per week. That is why we secured the camp for such a long period.
Camp and River: The camp is situated at the higher bank of the confluence of 2 rivers just inside the Natural Park( many Fish Eagles and shy Bears) and contains of  8 wooden heated cabins for 2 pax each, a sauna, toilets,  kitchen and a restaurant. The generator delivers 220V and a satellite phone may keep contact with the outside world. There are 3 motorboats , 5 rubber boats,3 guides and 3 further pax camp staff. The whole area around the camp is covered with  pinetrees and birches whereas most of the river valley has a gravelbed inside and sand around, especially in resting pools, all covered with logs from earlier snowmelting.

The crystal clear river is of an astonishing beauty . It is absolutely THE flyfishing river ever… Only after a long period of rain it turns coloured.
The main river very often divides into numerous fishable branches , all in short distance.
From the camp you could walk endlessly and fish every ¼ hr of your stay at another spot. Most fishing places have a depth of  around 2 m. The main river cannot be crossed in waders A very nice option however is to let the main boats carry some Rubberboats upstreams and to let yourself float down to the Lodge in a day. The same way you float down from the camp and will be picked up in the evening. We have the complete river exclusively at our disposal, but just around the camp 25 people could easily fish without disturbing other camp mates….

The fish: In our period the Silver Salmon is slowly taking over the runs of Chum Salmon.
Numerous big Dolly Varden have then already followed the Chum. It is just here that you will meet additionally the Yellowmouth Char.  Also the White Spotted Char ( Kundzha) can be found here even when numbers have decreased. Many people however consider the large ( up to 73 cm) Arctic Grayling as the most fascinating fish they have ever seen. Most Char and  Grayling can be fished with a dry fly. Salmon are usually fished with a Floater and weighted streamers. If you are satisfied with  fishing Salmon in running areas close to the bank or resting pools you just change to some low swift water below hatching Salmon and start fishing for Char and Grayling.

Provisional program

Day 01: Flight from Europe to Moscow SVO II, transfer to SVO I, flight to Magadan (GDX) . In rare cases a transfer to IZMAILOVO Hotel one day before may be necessary.
Day 02: Arrival in Magadan, transfer to Hotel Magadan
Day 03: Sightseeing Tour to a.o. Fishing Market, Mammut Carving center and Gulag Central point. A possibilty to fish OLA-river as an alternative will be checked!
Day 04: Early morning Helicopter Flight to Yama-Lodge ( 1, 3 hrs). Accomodation in 2 p Cabins , Fishing, evening meal in Lodge Restaurant .Full Board during Lodge stay
Day 05-14: 10 Full days Accomodation and Fishing from Yama-Lodge
Day 15: Morning Fishing, afternoon Helicopter Flight back to Magadan, Hotel Magadan
Day 16: After breakfast transfer to Airport, flight to Moscow , due to time difference(CET +10) arrival at the same time in Moscow as departure from Magadan, either continuing flight to Europe or transfer to Hotel etc.

The Lodge not only has very good heated sleeping places, 220 V,  a cosy restaurant with Superb food, a  Sauna, toilets , excellent local boat transfers, satellite phone etc. but also
the best HOMEPOOL ( at 25 m) we have ever met! So, fishing as much as you want! Marlies and Wim will guide the whole trip.

After having had Great fishing with our groups in Chilean Patagonia during the last weeks

CHILEAN PATAGONIA 2007-2008

Introduction: It may feel strangeto think already aboutthe fishing period of November to April when our European Summer season hasn’t even begun. But, roughly speaking fishing in Chilean Patagonia takes place between October and May, around the summer of the Southern Hemisphere.

It is a must to consider Chile amongst your next winter fishing destinations and booking should be done right now, when flights are cheapest.

And, above all, fish; from escapees to the wildest, hardest fighting fish you can think of. Where do you find between October and May : Natural Rainbows and Browns, Coastal Rainbows almost reaching the stage of Steelhead, Sea Run Browns ( Seatrout), Atlantic Salmon, Silver Salmon and King. On some locations and periods you can specifically fish

for any of these species. Big numbers of mixed kinds , however, only show up incidentally.

Add an extra summer, big steaks, fresh salads, delicious fruits , asados, trophy wines,very friendly people, an astonishing animal life , especially when it comes to diversity of birds, and it is clear why we are fond of this country. And you will be, once you have been there…

During 12 years we have fished large parts of Chile , especially between Puerto Montt in Northern Patagonia and Punta Arenas in the Tierra del Fuego. Of course it is impossible to fish all southern Chilean rivers in a lifetime. There are thousands. Many probably never ever visited. We have fished some 60 different rivers and 15 lakes. Some rivers or lakes did not seem to hold a single fish. Considering their beauty it was hard to believe so. Some others however turned out to be extremely rich in fish, a few in big fish.

We think we know a few of them…. Marlies proved this and much more than once

General Fishing Information

At the end of October the spring fishing begins. In the rivers it is big Rainbow time. November sees the first King Salmon spring runs and December the first small runs of Atlantic Salmon .Coastal Rainbows, as well as funmaking , hardfighting Robalo’s are fished all year. Lodges hardly anticipate upon this spectacular new kind of Fly fishing……

During high summer ,December-February, you can expect a mixture from all kinds of Salmonides in all sizes. But much will depend upon the location , the present weather conditions and night temperatures.

So, if you do not want to remain fishing in your Homelake ( most Lodges do so) , you have to be flexible since a few hundred kilometers further away( too far for one single lodge) circumstances may be quite different

In some rivers you can specifically fish for Spring King Salmon , still rather fresh, returning to their spawning tributaries. However from March on Autumn run Kings are best ,whereas Trout swim back from lake into river performing a big Brown Trout period. This is also the period in which other Searun fish more frequently make their journey upstreams and your chances for Coho and Atlantic Salmon increase. Lake Fishing is good all year but best in High Summer and beginning of Autumn.

For Fresh Kings( yes, you will certainly hook them, even o a fly but landing them is another story) , Atlantic Salmon, Silver Salmon, Seatrout , Brown Trout and Rainbows, The Ruca Chalhuafe Lodge at Lago Llanquihue, in this period, is the place to be. Every day another fishing place; helicopter optional. Pure luxury . The local fishing program of the Lodge starts at Saturday. So you are 7 nights and 6,5 fishing day in the Ruca Chalhuafe Lodge. After that we will fish 2 more days from another luxury coastal lodge.

Average weight 4-7 lbs , max 27 lbs . A private plane will bring us from Puerto Montt to the lodge and back.

REPORTS AND NEWS

Reports:

Jan/Feb 2004: Reports from South-America guests were very positive. Rio Menendez in Tierra del Fuego offered quite some very nice seatrout up to 20 lbs a.o. to Luc Dorz and friends from Belgium; maybe not as big as from Rio Grande but certainly quite a lot cheaper. Also Rio Gallegos is turning into a top destination both at the Loop Buitreras camp as well as at our Truchaike base at reasonable rates. Chile keeps amazing: Adrian reports that apart from very big brown and rainbow trouts also salmon and steelhead have been fished in some rivers and in large periods. In the Lake District rivers many Atlantic salmon were caught in March, whereas Puyuhuapi area had fantastic salmon fishing in the sea already in February.

March 2004: Catches of Skrei ( big winter cod) in front of our house in Norway were numerous. Wim caught some 25 lbs + species and had wonderful ski weather as well…

May 2004: Yvan from Switzerland reported from nice catches of Atlantic salmon at Restigouche/Matapedia in New Brunswick. It was a 50-50 mixture of very big spent salmon (kelts) and very fresh run salmon.

June 2004: It looks like Southern Kola Atlantic salmon fishing should be done at the end of May or beginning of June. Yannick and friends reported spectacular fishing on Lower Varzuga with catches up to 50 salmon p.p. Verdalselva Lodge /Norway had 1 great period when Martin Bülter reported a 15 lbs and a 10 lbs salmon on June 17 th and 18 th. His friends, including Hartmut Kloss, coming in later only hooked but missed some big fish. Our 2 clients Kurt Rudolf and Heinrich Schmitz each caught a 15 and a 9 lbs salmon at Jon Olav’ stretch.

July 2004: Our 9 p group fishing for Atlantic salmon on a Nar Yan Mar river in Northern-Russia met air temperatures of 35 C and water temperatures of 24 C, for the 4 th week in a row. Good logistics and accomodation could not compensate the lack of fishable water. Only 14 salmon averaging 12 lbs felt to the fly, whereas 50 fly caught beautiful grayling p.p.p day averaging 3 lbs were no problem. On the last day 3 fly fishermen switched to spinning and caught 16 more, partly big salmon as shown by King Willy’s fish whereas other flyfishermen did not get anything out of the deep holding pools. Some people that had made a floattrip downstream reported large numbers of 4 -6 lbs brown trout in the upper parts. Must be repeated under normal conditions.

Special Note: Dr Marc Eyschen( 2 fly caught salmon, fished with a Sven Bungener rod, who himself had 3 salmon) arrived at the lodge without fishing rods. Mr Thomas Dürkopp was leaving the camp at the moment our group arrived. Marc( very good client of Dürkopp) asked him to borrow him a rod ,which was refused….

Some Norwegian clients that decided to fish Namsen/Norway had made the good choice. Jorg Fadle caught 8 salmon and many seatrout around Overhalla in the beginning of July. When waterlevels dropped dramatically Upper-Namsen remained the best bet. Guy Cauvin still had 2 salmon av. 8 lbs from Stordalselva /Afjord which is 1 hour drive from our house. Due to tropical circumstances Verdalselva came to a complete stillstand. At the end of July we cancelled all further Norwegian Atlantic Salmon fishing and arranged alternatives for 2005. Some decided to fish in our fjord which is always good to some pleasant surprizes. Jon Olav at the Verdal Lodge asked for permission to extend the fishing for 3 days. Due to heavy rains the result was incredible with over 100 salmon caught on his stretch in these first september days…….

August /September 2004: East-Siberian KOPPI river , reached still in time after logistical problems, showed the same pattern as Nar Yan Mar and Norway:
Bright sunshine, low water, usually not too bad for Pacific salmon fishing. Our standard motor boats( no powerjets) however could not get up further than some 10 km from the sea. With lack of current in the lower 5 km this meant that 12 pax could fish 5 km for Searun taimen ( Hucho Perryi) that under these circumstances would not move. It is amazing that still 24 Hucho Perryi above 1 m were fly caught. Hans Schober and Rudolf Kristof were the champs on fly. Next to smaller Hucho all had lots of Pinks , some very nice Kundzha and at the end some very large super fresh Chum averaging easily 25 lbs. Unfortunately Dollies were missing completely( upstreams). So fishing was tough but to most people satisfying. Fishing the same spot in June would have been better because the running Cherry salmon are protected and nets, fished by indigenous people, are not even allowed to them in that period.

As years go by………
Doing everything like acquisition, brochures, administration, contracts, fairs, guiding , interpreting etc, etc on his own Wim has expressed several times that the pressure on him Apart from some already long ago planned trips we will, most probably, unless we get quite some assistance, no longer organize difficult group trips!

On the other hand it is clear that Marlies and Wim had so many satisfied clients during these years that many of them not only became friends but also “ insisted” upon a kind of travelling together in future. It is our greatest wish to have this “ insist” fulfilled. Our Norwegian dreamhouse will always be open for a visit or a fishing holiday. Also will we insist upon special rates for our friends. We will still make some ( exploratory) trips; but not on a great scale, not with big groups. We are thinking about 2- 8 pax, including us. Sometimes we will have a trip idea that will be both adapted to man and woman . We would love to have 1-2 couples around us. Of course fishing will then make out an important part, but we will also pay attention to other specialities that many destinations have to offer….
