Yama Camp
Multiple days trip to YAMA river, the fly
fisherman’s heaven
Period: half of August - half of September
ARCTIC CHAR, ARCTIC GRAYLING, PACIFIC SALMON
Location: You will find Yama river some 200 km and a 1 hour helicopter flight North-West from the city of Magadan, the center of the Gulag Archipel, on the Sea of Okhotsk , just opposite of Kamchatka. Time difference with CET ( Central European Time) is + 10 hrs. The river is 260 km long , completely unhabited, with a preserve( National park) in its lower parts. Here , about 60 km from the sea, the cosy YAMA LODGE is built at the confluence of 2 rivers.
The River: You must be a poet to describe crystal clear Yama river. It is like a chain of sparkling channels around some tree holding islands every now and then coming together. Every bending is covered with logs showing you the force of water produced by the ice that melted in May. Pools will change every year. Wading possibilities remain however endless. If necessary you might walk along the pebble banks for miles. Runs, pools and smaller lakes follow each other frequently.

Silver Salmon
The Fish: In the second half of August you may expect some late Pinks, rather fresh Chumand bright silver Coho, representing the Pacific Salmon. Three kinds of Arctic Charr can be distinguished; the usual Dolly Varden that can grow up to about 90-100 cm, the Yellow Mouth Char ( Levanidovi) and the famous White Spotted Char ( Kundzha) with sizes up to 125 cm. Finally there is the unbelievable Arctic Grayling with record sizes up to 75 cm. Dolly Varden and Arctic Grayling are present in enormous numbers and if desired can be caught > 100 /day. The runs of Coho are limited. An average flyfisherman may count upon 3-6 coho/day.

Kundzha Yama Magadan
The Fishing: Fishing generally takes place between some 10 km upstreams and 10 km downstreams from the lodge and is divided in 4 areas of about 5 km each that you will fish on rotation base. A jetboat with quality raft for 2 pax will bring you upstream. The raft allows you to fish also “impossible” spots. If you are supposed to fish downstream you will either float down in the raft or another jetboat will bring you to your favourite spot. Both jetboats stay available in their area the whole day. You will take lunch on the river bank with a well-prepared package and a cosy fire. Without any doubt the homepool is the hottest spot on the river. So, if you do not like to go far one day : relax and fish around your bed .
The Fishing Equipment:
Marlies, my wife, caught all 7 species of salmonides by using just one rod , a
9 feet 7 weight Powell rod, one Billy Pate Trout reel with 2 spools
respectively containing a floating Rio Windcutter and a Teeny 250 , and 2 flies
, an Egg Sucking Leech and a bigger Caddis Fly. Those few that would like to
do some spinning had enough by using the famous Fox Pixee spoon with the orange
heart.
The Lodge: Four wonderful Log Cabins, each separated into 2 compartments offer very good space to 16 fishermen ( 2 pax/room). Each cabin has 2 beds with basic furniture, a table, a wood stove and electricity. There is a big banja containing a sauna, a shower room and a restroom. The well equipped kitchen with great cook is connected to the restaurant. Another wooden building hosts a bar and card playing room. There is a drying room with very basic washing facilities and 2 simple toilets. Electricity is produced by a powerfull generator and the connection with the outside world is kept by a satellite phone. Two power jetboats and 6 rafts ( not absolutely necessary).

Kundzha
Climate: Generally in August the temperature is between 12-22 Celsius with some rain every now and then.
Qualifications: Most fly fishermen qualify this camp as one of the very best in the world. The location, far away from any civilisation, is superb with fantastic home pool , very friendly staff , excellent food , good sleeping comfort and extraordinary fishing.
